The event started at 8.00am where the hospital nephrologist and a dialysis nurse appeared on a live television show. Public awareness on kidney disease was the core of the discussion. Burden of kidney disease in our environment, causes, symptoms, prevention and available treatment options were extensively discussed. At the hospital premises, free screening for kidney disease, blood pressure checks and free medical consultations were provided for the public. Some participants with poorly controlled hypertension were duly counseled and antihypertensive medications were given. Further laboratory evaluations were requested in those with evidence of kidney disease and plan for further hospital follow-ups were instituted.
